I need to draw! (LP Project Announcement)

I need to draw . . . so do you.

I’ve been swept up in a multitude of projects, and jobs, both mundane and fun, but they’ve been keeping me from sitting down with my ink pens and watercolors far too long. We’ve got Mondo Instante to keep us busy, but it’s been quite some time since the last group project involving other medium besides photography.

So, off the cuff I’m going to put this out there. I’m going to do it because, like I said, I need to draw! I feel something brewing so I’m turning to Mental Beans to kick me in the pants and motivate me. If you want to join in, all the better, we can turn it into a group project. I’m going to call this one LP.

Project Guidelines:
Select one album that you will listen to as you create whatever it is you create…a painting, an illustration, a photo or series of photos, a 3-d piece, jewelry, food, collage, whatever it is you’re inspired to do. Listen, create and then document. Interpret these rules any way you see fit—whether you directly respond to the album, or if you use it simply to set your mind free to create. When you’re done, take a photo or photos of your finished work, include what album you worked to, any words about it, and your name and location. Send to mentalbeans (at) tuliptreestudios (dot) com.

Due date is April 15th. If you plan on joining in this project, shoot me a message, a comment here or send a note in a bottle just so I have an idea of who is participating. All finished pieces will be posted in a group project post here on Mental Beans shortly after all entries are in my hands (sometime the week of April 16th).

Cositas project kickoff

Good (grey) morning to you all! Hopefully it’s not grey where you are. Nothing against grey, I actually enjoy the color, it’s just a little too overused in the skies over Ohio. Thankfully, I am introducing a very colorful project to counteract. I had mentioned Cositas in a recent post, and it is now in full swing over on the Mental Beans! Facebook page. If you haven’t already, join the page if you’re on Facebook so you can take part in the off the cuff projects that originate there, which is happening more and more frequently these days.

A little introduction to Cositas, which means “little things” in Spanish. Cositas was proposed by Mental Beans! collaborator Mecha (our friend at the end of the world down in Patagonia—Puerto Madryn, Argentina, if you don’t know already) who suggested a photo game in which a theme of the day is announced  (little things, like “mirror,” “socks,” etc.) and participants post photos they take or have on hand that fall under that theme within a 24 hour period. It’s like the unstructured version of Mondo Instante (with no coordinated time), but it still gives insight and a little window into the lives of our participants, just as MI does and shows a slice of life in different parts of the world based on common objects. It also incorporates the game of “tag” in a way, as the first person to post a photo for the day’s Cosita event gets to choose the next theme, and decide when the next event will be held. After a few Cositas events build up, I will grab the photos and re-post them here.

That said, here are four events that recently occurred.

As I write this, the 5th Cositas is underway, with the theme of “murals.” So if you happen to be near a mural, or have a photo of one, please get over to the Facebook page and share…a very exciting theme for sure!

For anyone new to the project MI is the global photography experiment developed by three women on three different continents: myself (Shannon, here in the Cleveland, Ohio area, United States, North America), Mecha (Argentina, South America), and Silvia (Italy, Europe). The project name itself, Mondo Instante, is a blend of Italian “Mondo” (World) and Spanish “Instante” (Instant), or “the world in an instant,” in honor of Silvia and Mecha.

The project occurs once every three to four weeks on a predetermined day at a specific time, and lasts only an instant (Mondo Instante!). At this designated singular moment, all participants from points around the world are ready with camera in hand to take a spontaneous photograph of their immediate environment, whether it be a self portrait, of someone or some object close by, or a panoramic shot of their location. The photos are then submitted, and then finally posted together side by side in an online gallery exhibition here on the blog— little windows into the lives of people all over the world at the same moment in time.

To submit photos:

Email to blog at tuliptreepresents dot com no later than Wednesday, August 24, 2011. Please send as a jpg file and if possible as a 600×800 @72dpi image. Please label “mondoinstante10(yourname)”

Thanks and please continue to help spread the word . . . ast MI was the most diverse in terms of location yet, and we had new people jump on board, always encouraging to see this project spread and grow!
