Song of the Day: “Mali-ko (Peace / La Paix)” – Voices United for Mali/Fatoumata Diawara + friends

I’ve been following what is happening across the ocean with a great sadness, as music from all around the world, and in particular the sounds coming out of Africa, is something that I cherish. My love for it has long been worn into the fabric of my existence since the first day I sat down in my seat (and in all truth, even long before that) for an elective class in college, Music as a World Phenomenon, over 20 years ago.

Out of the darkness of the events happening far away (yet hitting too close to my heart) comes a beautiful song that was posted today from Fatoumata Diawara, Oumou Sangare, Afel Bocoum and so many others standing in opposition to the situation in Mali. It is important the world hears this, and to read what is happening, to know what is at stake. Translation of the lyrics appears on the Soundcloud link, please read as well as listen:

From the Soundcloud post:

In response to the situation in Mali, Fatoumata Diawara has gathered together over 40 of the Country’s most renowned musicians to record a video and song calling for peace. The track is called ‘Mali-ko’ (La Paix) and includes Amadou and Mariam, Oumou Sangare, Bassekou Kouyate, Vieux Farka Toure, Djelimadi Tounkara, Toumani Diabate, Khaira Arby, Kasse Mady Diabate, Baba Salah, Afel Bocoum and Habib Koite amongst many others.

Song of the Day: Paul Westerberg – We Know the Night

It’s been a long time since I’ve done the Song of the Day/Night feature, but I’ve had time to do a little poking around and I came across this and felt compelled to share. As a longtime Paul Westerberg fan (as long as I have been a Clash fan even), I’m always excited to find various non album tracks and things I’ve never heard, and Westerberg never ever disappoints me.

Big Audio Dynamite Live at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia

Today’s Song of the Day is another Two Sisters and a Show clip, but this time around it was one sister, one brother-in-law, one nephew, and one brother-in-law’s brother and a show, three long time fans, and one born and raised on BAD (nephew). I was hard pressed to stop and take photos or video because that meant standing still (tall order), but I did manage to do it for this one, at encore #1. An incredible show, and seeing Mick Jones live again for the second time in just under a year is something I never thought would happen, ever. Mick Jones: king of kings. Photos from this show are forthcoming in a future post.

I asked my nephew to give me five words to describe how he felt about the show. His reply, “amazing, cool, awesome, and surprising, and…loud.”
